Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. How do I find a contractor near me?

Use the search box on this page. Pick a trade, your state and your city. Then call the contractor or visit their website.

2. What does “Verified” mean?

It means the contractor’s license and General Liability certificate of insurance are on file with The Contractors Resource Center. Listings without the badge don’t have a certificate of insurance on file with us yet. Every listing has a Check license link, so you can see their status with the state yourself.

3. What is a General Liability certificate of insurance?

General Liability is insurance that can pay if a contractor’s work hurts someone or damages property. The certificate is a one-page paper. It shows they have the insurance and when it ends.

4. What does the yellow hard hat mean?

It is the Preferred Contractor badge. Preferred Contractors are licensed and insured, with a 4.5-star or higher Google rating from at least 10 reviews. They are Verified too, and they show first in search. The hard hat does not mean we checked the quality of their work.

5. Does The Contractors Resource Center check the quality of the work?

No. We collect license numbers and certificates of insurance. We do not check the quality of anyone’s work. Always check references and get written estimates before you hire.

6. What is Get Matched?

It is a short, optional form. Tell us your name, phone, email, zip code and what you need done. We send it to one Preferred Contractor near you. If we don’t have one near you yet, we will let you know.

7. Will my request go to lots of contractors?

No. Each request goes to only one Preferred Contractor. We never sell or share it with anyone else.

8. Do I have to use Get Matched?

No. You can search the list and call any contractor yourself. Get Matched is just an easy extra option.

9. Is this free for homeowners?

Yes. Searching and Get Matched are free for homeowners.

10. Why don’t I see a contractor in my city?

We are still adding contractors. Try a nearby city, pick “All cities,” or use Get Matched.

11. How can I check a license myself?

Tap Check license on the listing. It opens the state license board in a new tab. Look for the license number and make sure it says active.

12. What does the General Liability date mean?

For Verified contractors, it is the date their General Liability insurance runs through, from the certificate of insurance on file. The listing also shows the insurance company.

13. What happens when a contractor’s insurance ends?

A Verified listing comes off this page when its General Liability date passes. We remind contractors 30 days before, so they can send a new certificate.

14. How do I see a contractor’s certificate of insurance?

Tap Request certificate on a Verified listing. Send the short form, and we will help you get a copy. We do not post certificates on this page.

15. Why don’t listings show email addresses?

To keep contractors safe from spam, we show their business phone and website instead.

16. I’m a contractor. How do I get listed?

Get Verified. We need your license number and a copy of your General Liability certificate of insurance. It’s free. Get Verified.
